Professional Ayurvedic Oils in 5L: Bulk Sizes for Clinics
This article is part of our Ayurveda Practitioner Supplies guide series.
Why Clinics Need Bulk Ayurvedic Oils
A busy Ayurvedic clinic uses oil in quantities that make retail bottles impractical. A single Abhyanga (traditional warm oil body massage) session requires 100 to 250 ml of oil. A Shirodhara session can use 2 to 3 litres. A Pizhichil treatment, where warm oil is continuously poured over the body, may require 5 litres or more in a single sitting.
At this scale, purchasing retail 200 ml bottles is both expensive and wasteful. Professional 5-litre containers reduce the cost per litre, cut down on packaging waste, and ensure you always have sufficient stock for a full day of treatments.
Most-Used Oils in Clinical Practice
Dhanwantharam Thailam
One of the most versatile and widely used oils in Ayurvedic clinical practice. Dhanwantharam Thailam is traditionally used in Ayurveda to support the musculoskeletal system and is a staple for Abhyanga, post-natal care, and general body treatments. Its warming properties make it suitable for a wide range of clients.
Clinical consumption: high. Most practices list Dhanwantharam as their number-one oil by volume.
Mahanarayana Thailam
A complex formulation containing over 50 herbs in a sesame oil base. Mahanarayana Thailam is traditionally used in Ayurveda to support joint comfort and muscular ease. It is the go-to oil for treatments focused on the musculoskeletal system and is commonly used in Kati Basti, Janu Basti, and localised applications.
Clinical consumption: moderate to high, depending on your client profile.
Ksheerabala Thailam
A milder oil prepared with Bala (Sida cordifolia) and milk as base ingredients along with sesame oil. Ksheerabala is traditionally used in Ayurveda to support the nervous system and is a preferred choice for Shirodhara and head treatments. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for sensitive clients.
Clinical consumption: moderate, primarily for Shirodhara and head-focused treatments.
Sahacharadi Thailam
Traditionally used in Ayurveda to support comfort in the lower extremities. Sahacharadi Thailam is commonly applied in treatments targeting the legs and lower body. Clinics offering specialised lower-body treatments stock this alongside the core oils.
Plain Sesame Oil (Tila Thailam)
The base oil of Ayurveda. Many practitioners keep bulk sesame oil for mixing, warming up before treatments, and as a carrier when blending with concentrated medicated oils. A 5-litre supply of pharmaceutical-grade sesame oil is a clinic essential.
What to Look for in Bulk Oils
Manufacturing Standards
Not all 5-litre oils are equal. When sourcing bulk Ayurvedic oils, verify the following:
- GMP certification: the manufacturer should hold Good Manufacturing Practice certification, ideally both Indian GMP and a European or international equivalent
- Classical preparation: genuine Thailams are prepared according to the Taila Paka Vidhi method described in classical texts. This involves cooking herbs in oil with water or decoctions until the water fully evaporates. Shortcuts like cold-pressing herbs into oil produce an inferior product
- Batch testing: reputable manufacturers provide batch-specific certificates of analysis (COA) with heavy metal testing, microbial counts, and identity confirmation
- EU compliance: oils imported into the EU must meet REACH regulations and carry appropriate safety data sheets
Packaging
Bulk oils should arrive in food-grade HDPE containers or tin-lined cans. Avoid clear plastic containers, as light exposure degrades the oil over time. The container should seal tightly and include a tamper-evident closure.
Some suppliers offer oils in bag-in-box packaging with a dispensing tap. This is convenient for daily use, as it minimises air exposure each time you pour.
Storage Guidelines
Proper storage protects your investment and ensures the oil remains effective throughout its shelf life.
- Temperature: store between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources
- Container: keep the original container sealed when not in use. For daily dispensing, pour smaller quantities (500 ml to 1 litre) into a working bottle
- Air exposure: minimise the number of times you open the bulk container. Air accelerates oxidation, particularly in sesame-based oils
- Shelf life: most classically prepared Thailams have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years from manufacture when stored correctly. Some formulations, such as Kuzhambu preparations, are considered to improve with age
- Labelling: mark each container with the date received and the batch number. Rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis
Cost Comparison: Retail vs Bulk
The economics of bulk purchasing are straightforward. A 200 ml retail bottle of Dhanwantharam Thailam might cost EUR 12 to 18. That translates to EUR 60 to 90 per litre. A 5-litre professional container of the same oil typically costs EUR 80 to 150, or EUR 16 to 30 per litre.
The saving is significant: 50 to 70 percent reduction in cost per litre. For a clinic performing five Abhyanga sessions per day, five days a week, annual oil consumption can reach 200 to 400 litres. At those volumes, the difference between retail and bulk pricing amounts to thousands of euros per year.

Shipping Considerations
- 5-litre oil containers are heavy (approximately 5 to 6 kg each). Shipping costs are calculated by weight
- EU-based shipping avoids customs duties and import VAT complications
- Delivery within the EU typically takes 3 to 7 business days
- For large orders (20 litres or more), contact Art of Vedas directly for pallet shipping rates
Building Your Oil Inventory
A practical starting inventory for a new Ayurvedic clinic might include:
- Dhanwantharam Thailam: 2 x 5L (primary treatment oil)
- Mahanarayana Thailam: 1 x 5L (musculoskeletal treatments)
- Ksheerabala Thailam: 1 x 5L (Shirodhara and head treatments)
- Plain sesame oil: 2 x 5L (base oil, warming, mixing)
- One or two specialty oils in 1L format based on your treatment menu
This gives you approximately 30 litres of oil to start, sufficient for the first 4 to 8 weeks of moderate clinical activity. Adjust quantities based on your treatment frequency and client load.
