The ancient science of Ayurveda is strongly rooted in various therapies that promote a holistic lifestyle and a balance in the body, mind, and soul. Greeva Basti is a hot oil therapy for the neck region in Ayurveda.
The term "Greeva Basti" originates from two Sanskrit terms: "Greeva," meaning neck, and "Basti," signifying to hold something inside. This therapeutic procedure involves oleation and sudation around the posterior neck region. Oleation is the use of medicated oils, either externally or internally. Sudation is inducing sweat in the patient. The medicinal properties of the oil used in Greeva Basti enhance circulation, fortify musculature, and lubricate the joints. The application of warm oil facilitates deep penetration, nourishing the neck region, promoting blood circulation, and reducing inflammation.
THE PROCESS OF GREEVA BASTI
1. The patient assumes a face-down position on the massage table.
2. A dough made from gram flour is prepared.
3. The dough is molded into a small ring of suitable height, placed over the neck to cover all cervical vertebrae and 2-3 vertebrae of the thoracic region.
4. Heated, specially medicated oil is carefully poured into the dough-ring, with the oil changed periodically to maintain a lukewarm temperature.
5. Upon completion of the procedure, the dough is removed, followed by a soothing massage and Pinda Swedan over the treated area. The patient is then encouraged to rest.
THE BENEFITS OF GREEVA BASTI
1. It rejuvenates and nourishes nerves and muscle tissue around the neck and shoulders, promoting overall well-being.
2. This therapeutic procedure effectively lubricates cervical joints, improving flexibility and bringing about smooth, pain-free movement.
3. Greeva Basti alleviates discomfort associated with various neck and shoulder issues, including chronic pain, inflammation, and stiffness.
4. Greeva Basti stimulates nerves and blood supply, enhancing circulation in the neck and shoulder region, which aids in healing and recovery.
5. Patients often experience relief from a wide range of conditions such as chronic neck pain, cervical spondylosis, ankylosing spondylitis, cervical disc lesions, disk prolapse, sprains and strains, tension headaches and migraines, torticollis, vertigo, frozen shoulder, tingling, numbness of the hands, fibromyalgia, polymyalgia rheumatica, and spinal stenosis.
In most cases, Ayurvedic practitioners perform the Greeva Basti treatment on patients. It is advised you do your research and then select one that is most suited to your needs.
