Combretaceae: Arjuna’s Botanical Family

Arjuna belongs to the family Combretaceae. That single fact quietly connects several shelves of an Ayurvedic cabinet.

What a family is

A botanical family groups genera that share structural features. It sits above genus and species: Combretaceae is the family, Terminalia the genus, arjuna the species. The full name, Terminalia arjuna, is what identifies the plant.

Who else is in it

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) share the family and the genus, and both are fruits of Triphala. The guide to the genus sets out how three familiar Ayurvedic materials turn out to be relatives.

What family does not mean

It does not mean interchangeable. Relatives can differ in the part collected and in how the texts place them, and Arjuna is a bark while its two relatives are fruits. Botanical kinship is a map of structure, not a licence to substitute.

On the label

Arjuna Capsules name the species and the part rather than the family, because those are what identify the material in the jar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between family, genus and species?

Family is the broadest of the three, genus sits inside it, and species identifies the individual plant.

Are family members interchangeable?

No. They may use different parts and be treated quite differently.

Why name the species and not the family on a label?

Because only the species and part say what is actually inside.
