In brief: An Ayurvedic spa menu needs fewer products than it seems: a few Thailams in back-bar formats, an Udvartana powder, face oils and face packs, the Kansa tools, and a small retail shelf that lets guests take the treatment home.
Build the menu from the treatments
Start from the treatments you want to offer and let them decide the products. The table covers the treatments most Ayurvedic spa menus are built on.
| Treatment | Products | Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Abhyanga (classical warm oil massage) | Dhanwantharam, Ksheerabala or Mahanarayana Thailam; the Vata, Pitta and Tridosha massage oils | Treatment table or Dhroni table; oil warmer |
| Shirodhara | Ksheerabala, Brahmi or Chandanadi Thailam | Shirodhara vessel and stand |
| Udvartana | Kolakulathadi or Kottamchukkadi Churnam | None beyond the table |
| Ayurvedic facial | Mukhalepa, Rose Petals Powder, Ayurvedic Face Oil, Kumkumadi Serum | Kansa wands for facial massage |
| Padabhyanga (foot massage) | Padabhyanga Oil | Kansa Vatki |
| Garshana (dry massage) | None | Garshana gloves |
Back-bar formats
What is used in the treatment room should be bought in the format the room can finish while it is fresh. The classical Thailams used in volume come in 1 litre and 5 litre formats, and the Ayurvedic Face Oil is also supplied in 5 litres for back-bar use. Decant into labelled working bottles each day and keep the large containers closed, cool and dark. Our guide to Thailam in 1 litre and 5 litre formats covers choosing, decanting and storing them.
Choosing oils with the guest
Offering a choice of oil is part of what makes an Ayurvedic treatment feel personal. The Vata, Pitta and Tridosha massage oils give guests a simple choice by constitution, and the classical Thailams let a practitioner on the team go further. Many spas also turn the menu with the seasons, as the classical daily and seasonal routines (Dinacharya and Ritucharya) do: warmer, heavier oils in the cold months, lighter and cooler ones in summer.
Write every treatment as a protocol
For each treatment, write down the oil or powder, the quantity, the temperature of the oil, the sequence of strokes and the time. A protocol keeps the treatment the same whichever therapist gives it, makes training new staff quicker, and turns the product list into a reorder list, because the quantities per treatment are already known.
The retail shelf
Guests who have felt a product during a treatment are the most natural buyers of it afterwards. A small shelf next to reception is enough: the massage oil used in the treatment, a face oil and the Kumkumadi Serum, a Kansa wand, and daily-care tools such as a copper tongue cleaner. Retail packs are supplied sealed and fully labelled, at trade prices, and are sold as supplied.
Consistency across therapists and locations
A treatment should feel the same whichever therapist gives it. Use the same oil in the same format for each treatment, write the preparation into the treatment protocol, and label every working bottle with the oil, its batch number and the date it was filled. Spa groups can order centrally and have each location delivered separately, and can have oils and powders packed under their own name: formats, minimum quantities, artwork and labelling languages are agreed per project.
Ordering
Spas, wellness centres and yoga studios order through Shop Ayurveda EU, our platform for professional buyers. Registration is free, and trade prices, the professional formats and equipment quotations are available once the account is approved. The complete range is set out on our wholesale page.
Common questions
Which oil suits a spa Abhyanga?
Many spas use one of the general classical oils, such as Dhanwantharam, Ksheerabala or Mahanarayana Thailam, as the house oil, and offer the Vata, Pitta and Tridosha massage oils as a choice for the guest.
Do you offer private label for spa groups?
Yes. Oils and powders can be packed under the spa's own name, for the treatment room and for retail. Formats, minimum quantities, artwork and labelling languages are agreed per project.
Can guests buy the products online after their visit?
Yes. The retail sizes are sold on this site, delivered from warehouses inside the EU.
