Haridra and Daruharidra: Two Different Plants

Haridra is turmeric. Daruharidra, literally the Haridra of wood, is something else: Berberis aristata, a shrub with bright yellow wood.

Why the texts pair them

The classical literature often names the two together as the two Haridras. The pairing rests on colour, not botany: turmeric is a rhizome of the ginger family, and Daruharidra is a barberry.

Why it matters on a label

The two are different materials, so a label should say which one it contains. Curcuma longa is turmeric; Berberis aristata is Daruharidra.
