Punarnava: Renewed Again

Punarnava is two ordinary Sanskrit words. Punar is again. Nava is new. Renewed again.

What the name records

The plant withers through the dry season and returns when the rains come, growing again from a root that waited underground. Whoever named it was describing that, and the observation became the word.

The rains, again

Several of its other names return to the same season. Varshaketu makes it a banner of the rains, and Kshudravarshabhu ties it to the wet season too. The vocabulary keeps circling one habit of the plant.

A name about the plant, not the person

It is worth being plain: the name describes what the plant does in a field through a season. Art of Vedas describes the classical record and the contents of the jar, and leaves it there.
