Two species
Sweet basil is Ocimum basilicum, the herb of pesto and of Mediterranean cooking. Holy basil is Ocimum tenuiflorum, also named Ocimum sanctum. They share a genus, a family and a general look, and not much more.
Telling them apart
Holy basil has smaller, often slightly hairy leaves and a sharper, clove-like scent. Sweet basil has larger, glossy leaves and the sweet scent familiar from cooking.
Why it matters
A label that says only basil could mean either. The species name is the only reliable way to know which is meant, as the label guide sets out.
